Bad Monkey on Apple TV+

Bad Monkey has been another hit for Apple, occupying the top of the Apple TV+ charts throughout much of its first season run. In a recent interview, its co-creators shared some good news about plans for the continuation of the show into season 2 and beyond.

Future season plans for the hit Bad Monkey

Bad Monkey was co-created by Bill Lawrence of Ted Lasso fame, and the series’ lead actor Vince Vaughn. Both were recently interviewed by Max Gao at The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s success. They took the opportunity to spill plans for its future.

Some viewers may know that Bad Monkey was based on a novel by Carl Hiaasen. As a result, it may not lend itself to additional seasons. But there’s good news.

Here’s Bill Lawrence:

Carl very seldom wrote sequels to his novels — [yet] he wrote a sequel to this one called Razor Girl that we have. Carl always tells me, with his main characters, he’s a big believer in one step forward, two steps back. But he really wanted to write a second book so that you could see Yancy on a journey to becoming a guy that doesn’t get in his own way when it comes to happiness.

Gao presses Lawrence further on the potential for more seasons. He asks, “The way you’ve built the show seems to imply that you could generate a new mystery every season and follow this protagonist for a very long time. How long do you plan to explore Yancy’s life?”

Lawrence responds:

When I pitched it [to Apple], I had a beginning, middle and end of a three-season arc for this character, and for who he would be and where he would get to — and they were really receptive to it.

So the plan is for not just one additional season, but two. It’s unclear whether both additional seasons would be based on Bad Monkey’s sequel, Razor Girl, or if some original material is planned too.

It’s worth stating that Apple hasn’t officially renewed the show for more seasons yet. However, based on the show’s success, that will no doubt happen soon.

And who’s to say Yancy’s adventures won’t extend beyond the planned three seasons? Another popular Lawrence series, Ted Lasso, was conceived as a three-season show but it’s now expected to return for season 4.

Maybe if Bad Monkey continues to prove popular, we’ll get many more seasons to come.
