Apple Intelligence notification summaries beta 3

Apple has officially responded to growing concerns around incorrect Apple Intelligence notification summaries. In a statement today, the company said it will release a software update “in the coming weeks” that makes it clearer when Apple Intelligence is summarizing notifications…

In a statement to the BBC, an Apple spokesperson said:

Apple Intelligence features are in beta and we are continuously making improvements with the help of user feedback. A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report a concern if they view an unexpected notification summary.

The BBC has highlighted multiple instances of Apple Intelligence botching summaries of notifications from the BBC news app. One such example suggested that Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. Last week, the BBC published another story highlighting multiple other examples of incorrect Apple Intelligence summaries.

Today’s statement marks the first time that Apple has addressed the BBC’s concerns. The news outlet has said incorrect Apple Intelligence notification summaries “are harming trust not only in the BBC, but in news and information more widely.”

Apple has not shared specific details on how it plans to address these concerns. iOS 18.3 is currently in beta testing and is expected to be released to everyone later this month, and it’s possible the changes to notification summaries are included in that update.
