Cobots, medical robots, humanoids—all of these robots demand pinpoint accuracy. Strain wave gearboxes play an important role in the field of lightweight robotics, offering zero backlash and surprisingly high torque density in a compact package.

One of the key highlights of Germany-based Schaeffler’s robotics portfolio is the RT1-T sensorized precision strain wave gear, which features an integrated sensor that measures torque at the output of the gear. Incorporating torque — and by extension, force — feedback into robotics systems allows them to measure the weight of objects they handle and the force they apply, essentially giving robots a sense of touch. Similar to advanced vision systems, this sensory improvement adds another layer of information that enables robots to perform tasks more precisely.
